Violin and viola are unforgiving instruments to learn casually — posture, intonation, and bow technique need expert eyes from day one. Our string faculty are working orchestral professionals who teach the fundamentals the way they learned them at Peabody and CCM.

• Sean Chen is an Associate Musician with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, a doctoral candidate at CCM, and performs with the Mason, Lima, and Butler Symphony Orchestras.
• Cathy Chiu holds performance degrees from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and performs with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra.

Students begin as young as 5 or 6, and we guide families through instrument sizing and rentals at any budget. Viola students are warmly welcome — and often find extraordinary opportunities in school ensembles.

Built for Mason City Schools String Players

Mason City Schools has one of the most decorated music programs in Ohio. The district's orchestra program serves over 1,000 string students in grades 6–12 and has earned unanimous superior ratings at state adjudicated events. Orchestra begins in 6th grade — which means the students who arrive with solid private training are the ones who thrive from the first chair placement audition.

Many Musical Moments students play in Mason City Schools ensembles and come to us to prepare for orchestra placement auditions, All-State tryouts, and OMEA Solo & Ensemble Festival.
